Two patterns in that table that nobody points out. • Do review the cues they already know, in easy settings, and reward generously. Don’t launch a brand-new training program in the window — start it after the station-direct date and let the retrograde take the blame for the delay.
• Do confirm the things that involve other people’s calendars: vet appointments, groomer, sitter, boarding, travel paperwork.
• Do check the microchip registry has your current number. This is the single most useful thing on any retrograde list, and it takes four minutes.
• Don’t switch food or litter brands cold inside the window — a slow, mixed transition is what veterinarians recommend in any month, so this one is free.

Type “mercury retrograde dogs” into a search engine and one of the highest-ranking social posts is a worried owner describing a dog acting strangely after a thermometer broke. That is not astrology. Mercury the planet and mercury the metal share a name and nothing else, and because the confusion is real, here is what the veterinary sources actually say about the metal.

Where it comes from. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists old glass thermometers and some light bulbs (elemental mercury), certain batteries and latex paints (inorganic salts), and fish high on the food chain — it notes that “commercial fish products, such as tuna, have resulted in longterm poisoning in people and cats.” The Pet Poison Helpline adds that fluorescent bulbs “can also contain small amounts of mercury,” while saying the amount from “a broken bulb or two is not anticipated to cause significant health risks.”

What it looks like. Per Merck, the signs are neurological and can take weeks to appear after organic-mercury exposure: blindness, excitement, abnormal behavior and chewing, lack of coordination, convulsions; cats specifically may show hind-leg rigidity and tremors. Its warning is blunt — “neurologic signs may be irreversible.” So if the phrase “my cat is acting weird” comes with a broken thermometer or a fish-heavy diet attached, that is a phone call, not a horoscope.

The thermometer case, specifically. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center addressed this directly in a 2004 toxicology brief: because the mercury in thermometers is poorly absorbed from the gut, the risk of toxicity from swallowing it is low — the bigger danger is the glass causing obstruction or perforation.
