Is the cat a zodiac sign? Three different answers Western · Chinese · Vietnamese
Western astrology: no sign is named “cat,” but every cat has one — set by her birth or adoption date on the same twelve-sign calendar people use. That is what this whole page is about.
Chinese zodiac: there is no cat among the twelve animals. The folk tale “The Great Race” explains why: the rat, riding across the river on the ox’s back, pushed the cat into the water — the cat never finished, missed all twelve places, and (so the story goes) has hated the rat ever since. If you searched “why does the cat hate the rat in the zodiac,” that’s the legend.
Vietnamese zodiac: yes — the Cat holds the fourth position that China gives the Rabbit, most likely because the Earthly Branch character for that slot sounds like con mèo, Vietnamese for cat. So a cat born in 2023 was, in Vietnam, born in the Year of the Cat.
