Twenty-eight of June's thirty days never change sign. June 1 through 19 were Gemini in all eighteen years of our measured table of sign changes, 2010–2027, and June 22 through 30 were Cancer in all eighteen. The two days in between are the whole question. The table is kept in US Eastern time, and every time on this page is ET.
What moves between June 20 and 21 is the June solstice. The Sun enters Cancer at the instant it reaches its northernmost point for the year, so the start of the Cancer zodiac sign and the solstice are the same event, and the solstice does not keep a fixed calendar date. It drifts about six hours later each year and jumps back after a leap day. Between 2010 and 2027 it fell on June 21 in twelve years and on June 20 in six: 2012, 2016, 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.
For a June dog, the useful detail is the clock, not just the date. In the six June 20 years, the crossing came in the late afternoon or evening:

Put a birth hour against that list. A puppy born at 6 pm on June 20 was a Cancer in only two years of the eighteen, 2020 and 2024. Born at 11:59 pm, it was a Cancer in all six of the June 20 years and a Gemini in the other twelve. Earlier than 4:51 pm on June 20, Gemini every time.
June 21 runs the other way. In the twelve years when the solstice fell on the 21st, the crossing came between 12:24 am (2017) and 1:16 pm (2011); for the summer just past it was 4:24 am on June 21, 2026, and in 2027 it will be 10:10 am. A dog born at 6 am on June 21 was a Cancer in ten of the eighteen years. Born at noon, sixteen of eighteen. After 1:16 pm, every year in the table. So a June 21 birth certificate is not quite a Cancer certificate: the morning hours still belonged to Gemini in a handful of years.

June 1–19 belongs to Gemini every year: in astrology's sketch, the dog that learns a new word by Tuesday and is bored of it by Thursday, talkative, quick, and restless when nothing is happening. Where June sits in the dog birth calendar Inside the March–July peak, among registered dogs
No agency counts dog birthdays, so there is no census to say how many puppies arrive in June. What exists are registries and breeding records, and they put June in the busy part of the year. The clearest sample is the 2018 study by Boland and colleagues in Scientific Reports, built on Orthopedic Foundation for Animals records for 129,778 dogs across 253 breeds. On the birth calendar it reports "a peak of births in May with March – July being the peak birth period for domesticated dogs." June is the month after that May high point and well inside the five-month plateau.
Older British records point the same way. Evans's 1993 paper in Epidemiology and Infection, drawing on Kennel Club and Guide Dogs for the Blind Association breeding records, describes "a greater number of puppies being born in the summer months than the winter." June opens that summer stretch.
Read both with the fine print attached. The OFA sample is dogs whose owners submitted them to a health registry, and the British figures are pedigree and guide-dog breeding records, so "peak" means peak among registered, kennel-club dogs. A mixed-breed puppy from a farm litter or a shelter is not in either count. And a dog is not a seasonal breeder the way a cat is. VCA's veterinary notes on the canine estrous cycle put it plainly: "Most dogs come into heat twice per year, although the interval can vary between breeds and from dog to dog," and "There is no set breeding season for domesticated dogs," with basenjis and sled-dog breeds named as the exceptions. A June litter is common in the records, then, without being anything a June dog had to be.
For the months on either side, May holds the peak itself and July closes the peak period. Half a year across the calendar, a December puppy is born outside the March–July window altogether, which makes December the mirror of June in the birth records as well as in the zodiac.
If the paperwork just says June About 2 in 3 for Gemini
A month on its own still narrows the field. Nineteen June days are Gemini in every year, nine are Cancer in every year, and two split by year and hour. Spread births evenly across the thirty days and across the eighteen years, weighting June 20 and 21 by each year's crossing time, and a June dog comes out Gemini 67.2% of the time: about 2 in 3.
That figure describes the calendar, not real litters. Nobody has a day-by-day count of June puppy births, and the even spread is an assumption made so the sum can be done at all. Treat it as a lean toward Gemini, not a verdict, and if the shelter card says "June" with nothing after it, the quiz at the end of this page reads behavior instead of dates.

Many June birthdays were never witnessed; a shelter worked them out from the puppy's teeth and weight. VCA's guide to puppy teeth and teething gives the clock: "At around 12 weeks, the deciduous teeth begin to fall out, and the permanent teeth begin to erupt," with the full set in by six months. That is accurate to weeks, not days, so a "born June 15" card can hold a dog born on either side of the solstice. June is also a month a lot of dogs come home, and a gotcha day is a date you actually know. A puppy adopted at eight weeks on June 10 was born around mid-April: an Aries birthday and a Gemini gotcha day. One adopted on June 28 was born in early May, a Taurus by birthday and a Cancer by the day you signed the papers.
Neither date is wrong, but they answer different questions. The birthday gives the sun sign in the ordinary sense, and it is what a full reading uses. The gotcha day marks the life you share and some families prefer to read from it. If the two fall in different signs, read both profiles and see which one describes the dog on your floor.
