Libra or Scorpio? October Dogs, Where the Printed Chart Mostly Holds

October opens in Libra and closes in Scorpio, and the hand-off between them lands on the day the printed tables say it does in thirteen of the eighteen years we measured. The month also sits well past the birth peak that registered dogs show, with one breed, the Basenji, running a calendar of its own.

Libra, then Scorpio: the two October signs An air sign, then a water sign

Libra holds October 1 through 21 in every year of the table. Astrology's Libra dog is the low-friction one: easy with other dogs, slow to escalate, inclined to sit a quarrel out rather than join it. Printed zodiac tables start Scorpio on October 23. Our open table of 216 sign changes for 2010–2027, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and listed in US Eastern time, agrees in 13 of those 18 years. In the other five — 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, and 2025 — the Sun crossed into Scorpio on the evening of October 22. Every one of those five crossings came after 6 pm ET, and four of the five years are leap years.

Read the list by day. On October 22, a puppy was a Libra all day long in the thirteen October 23 years, and in the five other years a Libra until that evening's crossing, which fell between 6:14 pm (2024) and 11:50 pm (2025). On October 23, the whole day was Scorpio in those five years; in the other thirteen the crossing came between 12:51 am (2021) and 2:30 pm (2011), so a morning birth on the 23rd can sit on either side, depending on the year. A puppy whelped on the night of October 22, 2025, at 11:30 pm was a Libra by twenty minutes; the same minute one year earlier was already Scorpio.

All of these are Eastern clock times. A litter born in California at the same instant shows a time three hours earlier on the whelping-box log, so convert before comparing. Where October sits in the dog birth year Past the peak among registered dogs

Nobody counts dog birthdays. No census records them, so every seasonal figure comes from a registry or a research sample, and it describes the dogs in that record rather than every dog born. With that said, the records that exist agree on where October stands.

One is the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database that Boland and colleagues used in a 2018 Scientific Reports paper: 129,778 dogs across 253 breeds, drawn from a health-screening registry that files its entries by breed. Across that sample the authors describe "a peak of births in May with March – July being the peak birth period for domesticated dogs." October is three months past the end of that span. Among OFA-registered dogs, then, an October birthday belongs to the quieter half of the year.

The reason is not biology alone. Dogs are not seasonal breeders: VCA's estrous-cycle guide puts it plainly — "Most dogs come into heat twice per year, although the interval can vary between breeds and from dog to dog." — and adds that "There is no set breeding season for domesticated dogs," with an exception we come to next. The curve in the registries reflects when breeders choose to mate and when bitches happen to cycle, averaged over thousands of litters.

Mating records show the other end of the same curve. A Swedish Kennel Club dataset of 2,469 litters born in 2004, across thirteen breeds, found that "Over all, most matings occurred during winter, with spring in second place," and that summer and autumn matings did not differ from each other. An October litter was conceived around early August, in that summer trough, which is one more reason October births run thin in pedigree records. The same study found that gestation length, litter size, and pup death rates did not differ between seasons, so a litter whelped in October is no smaller for it. The September dog, a month earlier, sits in the same post-peak stretch; November's dogs follow it; and April, half a year across the wheel, is inside the climb toward the May peak.

The Basenji exception: one season a year Autumn matings in a Swedish kennel-club sample

That Swedish study, Linde-Forsberg and Wikström's 2008 symposium paper, did not stop at the overall pattern. "The frequency of matings varied significantly between seasons in 7 of the breeds, but in different ways," the authors write, and the list of those seven ends with "in Beagles during spring, and in Basenjis during autumn." Autumn in that paper means September through November. So of the thirteen breeds in the Swedish Kennel Club sample, the Basenji was the one breed whose matings clustered in autumn, and October sits inside that window.

The veterinary side names the breed as an exception too. The VCA guide quoted above continues: "There is no set breeding season for domesticated dogs," it says, "except for basenjis and sled dog breeds." Where the Swedish data has other breeds mating across two or more seasons, it puts the Basenji in one, and that one season is the autumn of one registered population in one year.

The arithmetic matters. A Basenji mated in October delivers about nine weeks later, around December, so October is a typical Basenji mating month and an unusual Basenji birth month; an October-born Basenji was conceived in August, ahead of the cluster. Two cautions sit on top of that. The finding comes from one kennel-club registry in one country in one year, and the paper does not report how many Basenji litters made up its share of the 2,469. And nobody counts Basenji birthdays any more than other dogs' birthdays, so this describes the breed's registered matings in Sweden, not every Basenji on earth.

If the papers only say October About 7 in 10: Libra

A month without a day still narrows the answer. October 1–21 are Libra in every year of the table, October 24–31 are Scorpio in every year, and the 22nd and 23rd split by year and minute. Spread a birthday evenly over October's 31 days and the 18 years, weight the two split days by each year's crossing time, and Libra comes out at 71.6 percent: about 7 in 10.

The even spread is an assumption, not a measurement. No record says how real October births fall across the month, and the registry curve above only says that October as a whole runs quieter than spring among pedigree dogs, not which October days do. Detail helps: "early October" on a card is Libra in every year, and "the last week of October" is Scorpio in every year.

A birthday the shelter estimated Teeth, weeks, and the 22nd

Many October birthdays were worked out, not witnessed. Shelter staff and veterinarians age a puppy from its teeth, using the schedule VCA's puppy-teething guide lays out: "Puppies begin teething at around three weeks, and by approximately six weeks, all their deciduous teeth will have erupted." That gives an age in weeks with a margin of weeks, and an estimated "October 20" can reach the 23rd as easily as the 17th. Read all of this as fun and a way to bond with your dog, not veterinary advice; the age call belongs to the veterinarian or shelter who examined the puppy. Some owners skip the question and give the dog its adoption day instead: an October gotcha day is a legitimate birthday for astrology's purposes, and the calculator reads it the same way, but it will usually land on a different sign than a summer birth would, so decide which date you mean first.

Beyond the Sun: moon and rising for an October dog Two faster layers

A sun sign holds for about a month. Astrology adds two faster layers on top of it: the moon sign, which changes every two to three days and needs the exact date, and the rising sign, which changes every couple of hours and needs a birth time — the same minute that settles October 22 and 23. Two puppies from one October litter share a Sun and can differ in both.
